When your loved one is approved for home care services, the next step is choosing the right provider and beginning care. Many families worry about what to expect in those critical first 48 hours. At A1 Care, we believe preparation helps families feel confident.

Here’s a 48-Hour Start Checklist to guide your onboarding process.

Step 1: Initial Call with the Care Team

  • Confirm the start date and time for services.

  • Discuss your loved one’s daily routines, preferences, and medical needs.

  • Identify any urgent supports needed within the first few days.

Step 2: Care Plan Review

Your provider will create a personalized care plan based on the Individualized Service Plan (ISP) from DDS. Families should:

  • Review the plan for accuracy.

  • Ensure all supports (e.g., medication reminders, ADLs, mobility assistance) are included.

  • Ask questions about anything unclear.

Step 3: Meet Your Caregiver(s)

The first 48 hours usually include introductions with the direct support professionals (DSPs) assigned to your family. Tips:

  • Share personal details to help caregivers build rapport.

  • Walk them through the home environment.

  • Provide an emergency contact list.

Step 4: Safety & Home Setup

Prepare the home to make the transition smooth:

  • Secure medications in a designated spot.

  • Prepare any assistive equipment (wheelchairs, lifts, etc.).

  • Write down important routines (meal prep, bedtime schedule).

Step 5: Communication Plan

Establish a system for ongoing communication with your provider:

  • How will DSPs log daily activities?

  • Who should they call in an emergency?

  • How often will the family receive updates?

Step 6: Family Orientation

Within 48 hours, the provider should walk the family through:

  • Roles and responsibilities of caregivers.

  • Policies on scheduling and coverage.

  • How to escalate concerns or request changes.

Step 7: Follow-Up Call

By the end of the first two days, you should expect a call from your provider’s care coordinator to ensure:

  • Services are running smoothly.

  • The caregiver is a good match.

  • Any adjustments are noted.

Starting home care doesn’t have to feel stressful. With the right provider, the first 48 hours set the stage for long-term success. For more details, visit our page on Home Care Services in DC.
